If you’ve been keeping up with me, you know my 7-year-old son has Celiac Disease and therefore will be a gluten-free eater for the rest of his life. The only time I really find it to be a challenge getting him gluten-free meals is when we travel. It’s pretty easy to be gluten-free at Sushi restaurants – which fortunately we all love! Mexican restaurants can be great, too – if their corn chips and corn tortillas have not been cooked on the same griddle or in the same oil as the flour tortillas!
I was thrilled to find G-Free NYC, a gluten-free market — just 4 blocks from our hotel, on the upper west side. On the second day of our trip, in the pouring rain, under a huge hotel umbrella (that my boys wanted no part of), we walked to the market. We were greeted by the owner, Lynn Shute, who immediately offered us a delicious, gluten-free chocolate, chocolate chip cookie. Lynn showed us around her super cute, warm store, fitted with a huge, soft, wooden butcher block in the center. It was here we found gluten-free Heaven Mills Cinnamon Rolls that my son would be having for breakfast everyday on the rest of our trip. We also grabbed a couple boxes of The Grainless Baker Cheddar Snackers, which were fantastic! Lynn offers fresh baked goods from a number of sources, and the shelves and freezers are packed with things like biscotti, pastas and frozen pita breads, small pizza crusts, complete boxed gluten-free meals, and more.
I wish this gem of a store were near us in LA, but should you find yourself looking for gluten-free in NYC, please don’t miss G-Free NYC!
After spending a few days in the city, we headed to a wedding in Woodstock. (Wedding food coming soon! ;-)! ) I could not believe our luck when a stone’s throw away from our B&B, was a sign saying “Pizza – Gluten-Free!”
What!? Really!? Turns out the restaurant, The Garden Café, features vegan food and serves gluten-free pasta, breads, and amazingly delicious grilled, gluten-free pizza! Not only was gluten-free pizza on the menu, but it was being cooked on a huge grill out in the lovely garden. After tasting how good this pizza was, I introduced myself to John Barbaro — the pizza grill is his gig at the restaurant. John told me he makes his gluten-free dough with “some rice flours, water, and fresh herbs,” and those ingredients — combined with it being a thin crust — and cooked on the grill is what makes it so good. (I’m hoping to get some measurements soon!) Those of you who are gluten-free know just how hard it is to find a great pizza crust! My son proceeded to have three of these pizzas during our two day stay in Woodstock.

I’d seen these adorable kitchen timers online a while ago and loved them, so when I found myself in their NYC store on my birthday, I had to get one! My boys feel everything should have a name. So, I’d like you to meet Yorky! When Yorky rings, she bops her head from left to right. It makes her arms and antennas (or hair?) shake. So cute, right!?
