What is Chai?
Did you know that the word chai is the generic word for tea in Hindi, in India?
Chai is derived from the Chinese word for tea, which is Cha.
Chai is typically a blend of black tea and strong spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns.
Much like a curry, there are many different blends of chai with various combinations of spices.
What’s in Winter Chai Oatmeal Recipe?
Chai spice mix: cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and ginger
- low-fat milk
- brown sugar
- maple syrup
- dried cranberries
- fresh fruit
The combination of these ingredients in the Chai Oatmeal recipe will truly warm you up and make the oatmeal a comfort food breakfast like no other!

This Winter Chai Oatmeal recipe will warm you up on a cold morning, and with the addition of fresh fruit, it's the perfect way to start the day!
Pour the milk into a medium-size sauce pan, and add the sugar, syrup, vanilla, all of the spices and the salt.
Add the oats and stir until everything is blended evenly.
Turn the heat to medium, bring to a strong simmer and then turn the heat down and gently cook until the milk has been absorbed, about 10 minutes.
Serve with cream (I used half and half), fresh berries, banana and dried cranberries if desired.
